You do not need a car to get to Jeonju. In fact, going car-free is the easy option here — the train is faster than driving, and the bus is cheaper than both.
The short answer: take the KTX from Yongsan Station in Seoul, which reaches Jeonju in about 1 hour 40 minutes, or take an express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal in Gangnam, which takes about 2 hours 40 minutes to just under 3 hours. From either Jeonju Station or the express bus terminal, a short taxi ride or city bus gets you to Hanok Village. Here is how each option works in practice.

Do KTX trains to Jeonju leave from Seoul Station?
No — and this is the mistake almost every first-timer makes. KTX trains bound for Jeonju depart from Yongsan Station (용산역), not Seoul Station. The first time I went to Jeonju, I showed up at Seoul Station with twenty minutes to spare and had to sprint for the subway to Yongsan. Learn from that: put Yongsan Station into your map app, not Seoul Station.
Yongsan is easy to reach. It sits on Seoul Subway Line 1 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, so from most central neighborhoods you can get there in 20 to 40 minutes by subway.
How long does the KTX from Seoul to Jeonju take?
The fastest KTX trains cover Yongsan to Jeonju in about 1 hour 30 minutes. Most services take about 1 hour 40 minutes, and a few slower ones with more stops take up to about 2 and a half hours. A standard one-way ticket costs about ₩31,600.
Trains run roughly every hour through the day, starting early in the morning. When I rode the 7:47 out of Yongsan, I was walking out of Jeonju Station before 9:30 with the whole day ahead of me — that early start is exactly what makes a day trip feasible.
The ride itself is comfortable: reserved seats, power outlets, and large windows looking out over the countryside south of Seoul.

Book on Korail's website or app, or at the English-language ticket machines in Yongsan Station. On weekends and public holidays, book a day or two ahead — Friday evening and Sunday afternoon trains sell out.
Is the express bus from Seoul to Jeonju a good alternative?
Yes, and for budget travelers it is the default choice. Express buses leave from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (also called Gangnam Bus Terminal, connected to Express Bus Terminal Station on subway lines 3, 7, and 9) and arrive at Jeonju Express Bus Terminal. The trip takes about 2 hours 40 minutes to just under 3 hours, depending on traffic.

Buses depart about every 15 minutes from early morning until late at night, so you never have to plan around a timetable the way you do with trains. Fares run roughly ₩14,000 to ₩24,000 depending on the bus grade — standard, deluxe with wider 2+1 seating, or premium with near-flat seats and personal screens. Even the standard buses are comfortable, with reclining seats and plenty of legroom.
Buy tickets at the terminal counters or machines, or through a bus booking app.
Are there cheaper trains than the KTX?
Yes. If the KTX fare stings, Korail also runs slower trains from Yongsan to Jeonju. The ITX-Saemaeul and ITX-Maeum take about 3 and a half hours and cost about ₩26,200, while the Mugunghwa takes about 3 hours 45 minutes and costs about ₩17,600. They use the same stations, so the only trade-off is time. For a relaxed trip where the journey is part of the day, the Mugunghwa fare is hard to argue with.

How do I get from Jeonju Station to Hanok Village?
Jeonju Station sits a few kilometers north of the old town, so you need one last short hop. A taxi takes about 10 to 15 minutes and costs roughly ₩6,000–8,000. Taxis wait right outside the station exit, and you can also call one with a taxi app.
City buses are the cheaper option: buses 79, 119, 508, and 536 run from the station toward the old town in about 20 to 25 minutes. Get off near Jeondong Catholic Cathedral, which stands right at the edge of Hanok Village — you will see the tiled roofs as soon as you step off. Pay with a T-money card (tap when you board); drivers accept cash too, but having the card saves fumbling for exact change.
How do I get from Jeonju Express Bus Terminal to Hanok Village?
The express bus terminal is closer to the old town than the train station. A taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs roughly ₩4,000–5,000. By city bus, allow about 25 minutes — buses 79 and 1000 head toward Jeondong Catholic Church, right by the village.
Should I book tickets in advance?
On regular weekdays, you can usually buy KTX and bus tickets on the day. On weekends, public holidays, and festival periods, book a day or two ahead — Jeonju's big festivals fill trains fast. If your preferred KTX is sold out, the express bus (every 15 minutes) or the slower ITX and Mugunghwa trains work as backups.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Jeonju as a day trip from Seoul without a car?
Yes. Take a morning KTX from Yongsan — leaving around 7:47 gets you there before 9:30 — and return on an evening train after dinner. That gives you a full day for Hanok Village, Gyeonggijeon Shrine, and a bibimbap lunch, with no car needed at any point.
Is there a direct bus from Incheon Airport to Jeonju?
Yes. A direct limousine bus runs from Incheon Airport to Jeonju in about 3 and a half to 4 hours, costing roughly ₩33,000–34,000 one way. It is the simplest option if you are heading straight to Jeonju after landing.
Can I use a Korail Pass on the Seoul–Jeonju KTX?
Yes. International visitors holding a Korail Pass can ride KTX trains on this route within the pass's validity. Reserve a seat before boarding — pass holders still need a seat reservation, which you can make at stations or online.
How do I pay for local buses in Jeonju?
Get a T-money card at any convenience store in Seoul and load it before you leave. You tap it when boarding city buses in Jeonju, and it also works on the Seoul subway you will take to Yongsan or the bus terminal. One card covers the whole trip.
