Chuncheon is the lake city about an hour from Seoul where people go to walk above the water on glass and eat spicy stir-fried chicken. I went for exactly that combination, and it fit into a single relaxed day.
The short answer: Yes, Chuncheon makes an easy day trip from Seoul. Ride the ITX-Cheongchun train from Cheongnyangni Station (about 55 minutes) or Yongsan Station (about 70 minutes), walk the Uiam Lake skywalk, eat dakgalbi for lunch, and spend the afternoon along the Soyang River before taking an evening train back. Six to eight hours covers the highlights without rushing.

How do I get to Chuncheon from Seoul?
The ITX-Cheongchun train is the simplest way. It departs from both Cheongnyangni Station and Yongsan Station in Seoul and runs roughly hourly. From Cheongnyangni the ride takes about 55 minutes; from Yongsan it takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. I left from Cheongnyangni in the morning and the train was fast, clean, and on time.
Cheongnyangni is the better choice if you stay in eastern Seoul, Hongdae, or anywhere on subway line 1. Yongsan works well if you are based near Myeongdong or Itaewon. Tickets are sold on the Korail website and app; on weekends the morning trains fill up, so I booked the day before.
The cheaper alternative is the express bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, which takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes. I skipped it because the ITX is faster and drops you closer to the lake attractions.
What is the Uiam Lake skywalk?
The Uiamho Skywalk is a glass-floor walkway built over Uiam Lake, about 190 meters long and standing roughly 12 meters above the water. It opened in 2014 and sits along the lakeside bike path near Songam Sports Town, a short bus or taxi ride from downtown Chuncheon.

When I stepped onto the glass, the lake moved beneath my feet and my stomach dropped for a second. The deck is made of thick tempered glass, and visitors take off their shoes or wear shoe covers at the entrance. Entry is free, which makes it an easy stop even on a tight schedule.
Allow about an hour here. The walkway itself takes twenty minutes, but the lakeside path around it is pleasant to stroll, and there are benches facing the water. Chuncheon has a second glass walkway, the Soyanggang Skywalk, closer to the Soyang River; it charges a small entrance fee and gives a different angle over the water.
What is dakgalbi, and how do locals eat it?
Dakgalbi is Chuncheon's signature dish: chicken stir-fried with cabbage, onion, sweet potato, and rice cakes in a spicy gochujang sauce. It cooks at your table in a wide flat pan, and the server usually stirs it for you until the chicken is done.

The dish arrived as raw marinated ingredients, and within minutes the whole table smelled of chili and caramelized cabbage. The chicken was tender, the rice cakes chewy, and the heat built slowly rather than hitting all at once. When the pan was nearly empty, I asked for the finish everyone around me was ordering: fried rice mixed into the leftover sauce right in the pan. Order it. The crispy scorched bits at the bottom are the best part.
Dakgalbi streets and restaurant rows sit near downtown Chuncheon, an easy walk from the central areas. Portions are sized for two or more people, so solo travelers should look for places that serve single portions or join the lunch rush with a friend. It is a hearty, inexpensive meal that works in any season.
What can I do along the Soyang River?
The Soyang River runs through Chuncheon and feeds the wide lake landscapes the city is known for. Sightseeing boats depart from the Soyangho dock when the weather allows, and the riverside paths are good for a slow walk after lunch.

I spent my afternoon walking the river path rather than taking a boat, and the forested hills on the far bank were quiet enough to hear the water. This area was also a filming location for the drama Winter Sonata, which is part of why Chuncheon draws visitors from across Asia.
What does a Chuncheon day trip look like?
Here is the plan I followed, plus a shorter version if you start late. Trains run roughly hourly, so the exact times are flexible.

How do I get around Chuncheon without a car?
Chuncheon's sights are spread along the lakes, so you will move two or three times during the day. City buses connect the station, downtown, and the lake areas, and the routes are numbered and easy to follow. I used a mix of buses and short taxi rides, and nothing took more than about fifteen minutes. Taxis are inexpensive for the short hops between the skywalk, downtown, and the river.
Frequently asked questions
Should I add Legoland to a Chuncheon day trip?
Legoland Korea Resort opened in May 2022 on Jungdo Island in Chuncheon. It is Korea's first Legoland, with more than 40 rides and attractions designed mainly for families with children aged 2 to 12. It needs a full day on its own, so I would not combine it with the lake and food plan. Pick one or the other.
Is the Uiam Lake skywalk free?
Yes. There is no admission fee for the Uiamho Skywalk, and you can walk in during daylight hours. The Soyanggang Skywalk near the Soyang River is a separate attraction and charges a small entrance fee.
How much time do I need in Chuncheon?
Six to eight hours covers the skywalk, dakgalbi lunch, and the Soyang River. A half day works if you drop either the river walk or the second skywalk. An overnight stay only makes sense if you are adding Legoland or a slower lakeside day.
Is Chuncheon worth visiting in winter?
The lakes can freeze and the skywalk is quieter, but the walkways stay open and dakgalbi tastes even better in cold weather. Dress warmly, since both skywalks are exposed to wind off the water.
